Ex-Naval Pilot Steers His Career to Liberty Station Karate Studio

Martial Arts Instructor Hopes to Triple Current 142 Enrollment in a Year

After retiring from the Navy, Sal Convento says he’s still serving his country and the community as chief instructor at the United States Karate Academy at Liberty Station.The ex-officer opened his academy at the site of the former Naval Training Center in Point Loma last summer after being stationed in Nebraska from 2005 to 2006. During his military career, Convento was a pilot who flew missions over Iraq and Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom.

“I came back to San Diego because I thought it was the most beautiful place in the country, and I was ready to start a business here,” said the 35-year-old Convento. Read more.

Initiative and persistence reward U.S. Karate Academy

Ex-Navy pilot Sal Convento continues to keep his military experience in the front of his mind. After serving in Afghanistan and Iraq during Operation Enduring Freedom, Convento decided to settle in San Diego, opening the United States Karate Academy at Liberty Station, previously the Naval Training Center, in June 2007.

"It's the law of attraction," said Convento, who had eyed the corner studio since he was stationed in San Diego in 2002.

Within the Tang Soo Do community, Convento has gained accolades for his personal achievements in the art form. He has reached the highest level in martial arts, a third-degree black belt, and is a two-time Tang Soo Do World Champion. Read more.
